About the Position
Rhode Island Hospital, a part of Brown University Health, is seeking a skilled Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist (Sonographer) to join our team. In this role, you will play a vital part in evaluating the heart, a dynamic and intricately moving organ, using two-dimensional ultrasound technology. Your role involves conducting comprehensive cardiac assessments and diagnostic echocardiograms for patients of varying ages and medical conditions, from elderly patients to those in critical care units or with congenital heart anomalies.
Your responsibilities include:
- Performing M-Mode, 2D Doppler, Color Doppler, Exercise Stress, and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms.
- Using cognitive sonographic skills to adapt procedures and capture diagnostic images.
- Administering thorough assessments of wall motion, hemodynamics, and cardiac pathology.
- Positioning patients, adjusting machine controls, and using technical expertise to obtain optimal images.
- Taking accurate measurements such as chamber size, valve orifice, and pressure gradients.
- Assisting cardiologists with procedures like abscess drainage and needle biopsies.
- Maintaining and evaluating equipment, reporting malfunctions, and assisting with daily lab operations.
- Performing portable and urgent ultrasounds as needed, and working collaboratively with other healthcare team members.

Requirements
- Associate Degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent to understand cardiac disease physiology.
- Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology Program preferred.
- ARDMS certification in Adult Echocardiography expected within two years of employment.
- Registered sonographers must maintain "active" status with ARDMS in Adult Echocardiography.
- Must comply with ARDMS Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, with at least 15 CME hours over three years for non-registered sonographers.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate diagnostic data, communicate effectively with patients and healthcare teams, and work independently.
- Physical strength to lift patients, move heavy equipment, and maintain prolonged arm positions during scanning.
- Experience performing echocardiograms on technically challenging patients, especially during stress tests.
Physical Requirements:
The position involves physical demands, including lifting patients, moving equipment up to 500 lbs, and maintaining arm positions for scanning. Emotional and physical health must be sufficient to meet the role's demands, including working with patients who may be in critical conditions.
