About the Position
Rhode Island Hospital, part of Brown University Health, is seeking a skilled Ultrasound Technologist to join our team. Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, you will perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients’ illnesses and injuries. You will be responsible for reviewing patient histories, positioning patients, conducting ultrasound scans, and assisting physicians during procedures such as biopsies and aspirations. Additionally, you will maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and infection control standards are met.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing patient history and clinical data to facilitate accurate diagnostic results.
- Positioning patients and instructing them on the procedure to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Performing ultrasound scans using advanced equipment, adjusting settings as needed to capture accurate images.
- Assisting physicians during procedures by confirming the location of cysts, handing instruments, and scanning at designated intervals.
- Compiling necessary information and images for physician interpretation.
- Maintaining ultrasound equipment and ensuring a clean and safe scanning environment.
- Instructing and guiding diagnostic medical sonography students and providing on-the-job instruction to new employees.
- Assisting in the daily operations of the sonography department and participating in maintaining accreditation.

Requirements
- One year of formal training in an accredited School of Ultrasound or four years of experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer.
- Current CPR certification (AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers).
- ARDMS certification required.
- Demonstrated ability to operate ultrasound equipment, move patients into correct positions, and use analytical skills to obtain optimal diagnostic results.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients, staff members, and physicians, especially when patients are under physical or emotional stress.
- Experience working with patients of all ages, with knowledge of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural considerations.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This role involves working in a hospital environment with some exposure to radiation, which is minimized by following safety precautions. Frequent standing and lifting of patients are required, along with visual strain from working in dimly lit rooms and observing screens.
